Let’s get right into my LEGO Movie 2 movie review.
Not as Good as the First LEGO Movie, but Everything is Still Awesome
The LEGO Movie 2: The Second Part is the much-anticipated sequel to the 2014 breakout hit The LEGO Movie.
It brings back all the original main characters, led by Emmet (voiced by Chris Pratt), Lucy (Elizabeth Banks) and Batman (Will Arnett) from Bricksburg.
The LEGO Movie 2 also introduces a few new characters, led by Queen Watevra Wa’Nabi (Tiffany Haddish) and General Mayhem (Stephanie Beatriz) of the Systar System.
The screenplay is by Phil Lord and Christopher Miller, architects of the first LEGO Movie, and directed by Mike Mitchell (director of Trolls and Shrek Forever After).
A Cute Family Story
The movie takes place 5 years after the original and sees the citizens of Bricksburg being terrorized by invaders from the Systar System.
These invaders seem to be trying to destroy everything the Bricksburg inhabitants hold dear.
Several of the main characters are taken prisoner and forced into reeducation by Queen Watevra.
This forces Emmet to go on a rescue mission to bring them all back. Along the way, Emmet receives help from Rex Dangervest (also voiced by Pratt), pushing him to change his ways.
Rex Dangervest is basically an amalgamation of all the roles Chris Pratt has played during his rise to stardom.
Just like in the original LEGO Movie, The LEGO Movie 2 uses a lot of puns and playful uses of words. These get great results and there is a lot of laugh-out-loud humor throughout the movie.
The movie shines during the interactions between the original characters and the new ones, especially any scene with Queen Watevra.
The film slows down while Emmet is trying to become someone he’s not because he feels that’s what Lucy wants.
Maybe that’s by design, but I felt it negatively impacted the pacing of the film.
Also, there was no real uniqueness like the original.
It is still really cool to see a movie take place in the LEGO world, though.
LEGO Movie 2 Learning Moments
In a lot of ways, LEGO Movie 2 is about finding a common ground in order to grow together. There are several references to growing older and evolving as a person.
However, the main drawback to that evolution is leaving behind a part of what makes you who you are.
There is also great conflict between what you are used to and something new that’s introduced. The first reaction is anger and hatred, but really you must learn to understand where this change is coming from and create something beautiful together.
You know, basically dealing with a younger sibling. I really enjoyed the way they presented this theme in the movie.
However, it did drag on and slow down the plot at times.
Scene-Stealing Musical Numbers
We all remembered the hit song, “Everything is Awesome,” from the first movie.
The LEGO Movie 2 kicks things up another notch, to the point the film is almost a musical.
However, there are some real standout songs in this feature.
Jon Lajoie (Taco from The League) wrote several of the songs and they are hilarious. I first became a fan of Lajoie when I was introduced to his YouTube videos (such as “Everyday Normal Guy”).
The standout song that will stick in your head is the aptly titled “Catchy Song,” performed by Dillon Francis, featuring T-Pain and That Girl Lay Lay.
Two other great songs Lajoie wrote are “Not Evil”, performed by Tiffany Haddish, and “Gotham City Guys,” with Tiffany Haddish and Will Arnett.
My favorite song, though, was “Super Cool” by Beck, featuring Robyn and The Lonely Island. This was the first song to play during the credits and that whole sequence was awesome.
Final Thoughts
While The LEGO Movie 2 doesn’t quite live up to the awesomeness of the original, it’s still a great movie.
This is a film that both kids and adults will enjoy and is definitely worth the price of admission.
By the end of the movie you will feel better and want to go play LEGO your younger siblings or relatives.
Definitely stay through the end credits to see the sequence with “Super Cool.”
