20 Walt Disney World Tips and Tricks to Have a Magical Visit

1.  Purchasing Disney World Tickets

You basically have 2 ticket options when going to any Disney park: admission to one park per day or a Park Hopper ticket.

The difference being you are either confined to one park per day or you can bounce between the different parks with your ticket.

When going to a Disney theme park I highly recommend getting a Park Hopper ticket. This is especially true if you are spending multiple days at the parks.

The benefit being, if one park is super crowded, you can just hop over to a different park with shorter wait times.

These tickets are more expensive, however, in my opinion they are totally worth it.

After visiting several sites, the one I found with the best prices was Undercover Tourist.

For a 3-day Park Hopper ticket purchased through Disney was going to be $408.

Whereas through Undercover Tourist it only cost $386. Thatā€™s a savings of $22 ā€“ a total win in my book!

Awesome Customer Service

When I went, I purchased a 3-day Park Hopper ticket and then needed a 4-day ticket when I decided to visit an extra day.

I called up Undercover Tourist and explained my situation and asked if it was possible to switch to a 4-day ticket.

Good news for me, Undercover Tourist has amazing customer service.

The woman I talked to on the phone was very helpful and said it was no problem to switch.

After a few minutes and a quick transaction for the price difference, I had a new confirmation order in my email inbox. Score!

Just so you know, the email Undercover Tourist sends you is not your actual ticket. Itā€™s just an order summary that has the Walt Disney World confirmation number and barcode on it.

You need to print that out and bring it with you to Will Call at any of the parks to get your actual ticket.

Iā€™m not sure if opening the attachment on your phone and showing it to the Will Call cast member will result in your receiving a ticket.

The email specifically says to print it out, and itā€™s better to play it safe in these situations.

My friend, however, just took a screenshot of her PDF and was able to get her ticket that way. It might be best to have a printout and a screenshot just in case.

You do not want to travel all the way to Disney World only to be told that you canā€™t get a ticket because you didnā€™t have the printout.

Bonus Tip

The daily ticket prices drop for each additional day you add to your purchase.

A 1-day Park Hopper Ticket was $165. However, the per-day price of a 3-day Park Hopper ticket was $136.

Also, ticket prices vary depending on the day of the week and time of the year.

2.  Park Hopper Tickets and Combining Parks on Multi-Day visits

If you are visiting Disney World on multiple days, I highly recommend purchasing Park Hopper tickets.

Park Hopper tickets allow guests to go to multiple parks in one day.

The regular entrance ticket only allows you to enter 1 park per day. The Park Hopper tickets allow you greater flexibility during your visit.

If one park is really packed and the lines are long, you can open up the My Disney Experience app to see if the other parks have shorter lines.

I used this hack often, especially with the Magic Kingdom. Magic Kingdom is the busiest park, and thus has the longest lines.

If you run out of FastPasses and canā€™t stand to wait in long lines, check out the other parks to find better options.

3.  Download the My Disney Experience App

I highly recommend downloading the My Disney Experience mobile app for your phone.

Through the My Disney Experience app you can get a FastPass+ reservation, see the park showtimes, park hours, wait times for each ride and your GPS location inside the park.

Itā€™s very helpful in navigating the parks to get the most out of your visit.

The only way to get a FastPass is to use the My Disney Experience app.

You will use this app more than you imagined during your stay at Disney World.

4.  Purchase Some MagicBands

MagicBands are worn on your wrist like a watch and are used to store your park admission. They are not necessary, but they are pretty neat and make your day more efficient.

Once you get your ticket and a MagicBand, hop onto the My Disney Experience App to sync them together.

MagicBands are used for entrance to the parks and for FastPass check ins. They are also used to connect Disney PhotoPass images to your account.

According to Disney, they can unlock personalized surprises and experiences inside the parks, too.

If you are staying at a Disney Resort hotel, your MagicBand can be used as a room key.

The MagicBand can also be used to charge food and merchandise purchases to your room. That is only available during your stay at a Disney Hotel, obviously.

Disney World uses paperless tickets and you actually receive a card for admission.

The card is linked only to you by means of a fingerprint scanner at the entrance, however, you still want to keep it someplace safe.

I kept mine in my wallet and my friend had hers in a slim fanny pack.

Neither of us had any difficulty scanning the cards without having to take them out. I just pulled out my wallet, tapped it to the scanner and was on my way.

Bonus Tip

If you decide to purchase a MagicBand inside the park, you can link your admission card to it by setting up a Disney account.

To use your MagicBand with FastPass+ service, the MagicBand and theme park admission must be linked to your Disney account.

Guests staying at a Disney resort also get a complimentary MagicBand, which is pretty rad.

5.  Rides to Use a FastPass+ On at Disney World

Disney World has some really awesome rides, however, the lines can get pretty daunting.

I highly recommend using FastPass+ to save time and get on more rides during your trip to Walt Disney World.

For an in-depth review of the best rides at each park, please read my list of the best rides at Disney World!

Best Rides to Use FastPass+ on at Magic Kingdom Park

Entrance to Magic Kingdom in front of the train station at Disney World
My friend and I stoked to check out all the fun rides at the Magic Kingdom.

Seven Dwarfs Mine Train

The Seven Dwarfs Mine Train has the longest line at the Magic Kingdom by far.

The lines were over 100 minutes most of the days I was at the park, however, just before 8pm the wait dropped to 45 minutes.

I highly recommend using a FastPass for the Seven Dwarfs Mine Train.

Space Mountain

There are 2 lines on Space Mountain, which helps move things along faster.

That being said, it is an incredibly popular ride and the standard line is usually quite long.

Pirates of the Caribbean

Pirates of the Caribbean is incredibly popular and always has a long line.

The line does move at a decent pace because they can pack a bunch of people into the boats.

I used a FastPass on this line and had to wait about 2 minutes. Totally worth it and way quicker than waiting in line.

The Haunted Mansion

The Haunted Mansion was one of the original opening day rides at the Magic Kingdom.

This attraction is definitely a fan favorite and always has a long line.

The Haunted Mansion is an attraction you donā€™t want to miss and can get on quickly by using a FastPass.

Buzz Lightyear Space Ranger Spin

I love Buzz Lightyear Space Ranger Spin!

So do the majority of the rest of the guests visiting the Magic Kingdom.

Itā€™s a great little shooter attraction and definitely warrants a FastPass for the long lines.

Big Thunder Mountain

Big Thunder Mountain Railroad is an older classic roller coaster set in a mining town.

The lines are always long for Big Thunder Mountain and the FastPasses tend to go quickly.

Be sure to get one early if you want a FastPass.

Splash Mountain

Splash Mountain is a blast! This is Disneyā€™s classic log flume ride with 3 dips and a 5-story drop near the end.

On hot days, this ride is great because it gives you a chance to cool down.

The lines can get pretty long, so if you donā€™t want to wait, pick up a FastPass for it.

Peter Panā€™s Flight

Iā€™ve always loved Peter Panā€™s Flight. Itā€™s a chill little ride that takes you flying through the Peter Pan story.

Kids love this ride, too, so itā€™s always packed. If you donā€™t go on this one early when the park opens, try and grab a FastPass for it.

Best Rides to Use FastPass+ on at Disneyā€™s Animal Kingdom

Avatar Flight of Passage

Avatar Flight of Passage is absolutely incredible.

This is a ride you absolutely need to use a FastPass on because the average wait time is over 2 hours.

Avatar Flight of Passage has the longest line of any Disney World attraction in my experience. Try to go on it first, as well.

I donā€™t feel any attraction is worth waiting 2-3 hours to ride, so be sure to go on it early or get a FastPass.

Naā€™Vi River Journey

Pandora ā€“ The World of Avatar is the newest land in Animal Kingdom.

Both rides in Pandora have really long lines that necessitate getting a FastPass.

Naā€™Vi River Journey is a sweet boat ride through the Pandora jungle with incredible special effects.

This is another ride that has really long lines, so get that FastPass early before they are all gone.

Kilimanjaro Safaris

Kilimanjaro Safaris is another attraction I would recommend using a FastPass for, as it gets very busy.

However, if you arrive earlier in the day (maybe 8-9:30am), the lines are not as long, and you can use that FastPass on another ride like Expedition Everest.

Expedition Everest

The best roller coaster in Animal Kingdom is Expedition Everest ā€“ Legend of the Forbidden Mountain.

Expedition Everest is near Kilimanjaro Safaris and usually does not have a terribly long line until later in the day.

If you are going to ride it in the afternoon or evening, then grab a FastPass for it.

Best Rides to Use FastPass+ on at Disneyā€™s Hollywood Studios

Rock ā€˜nā€™ Roller Coaster Starring Aerosmith

The Rock ā€˜nā€™ Roller Coaster is the best roller coaster at Hollywood Studios.

The line gets really long for it, so itā€™s best to grab a FastPass.

The Twilight Zone Tower of Terror

The Twilight Zone Tower of Terror is a great ride that I really miss here in California.

There is always a long wait for this attraction, so be sure to secure your FastPass for this great elevator ride!

Slinky Dog Dash

I recommend using a FastPass or making a mad dash over to the new Slinky Dog Dash if you have a child.

Toy Story Land is pretty new, and this is their newest attraction.

Also, when you reach the highest point of the ride, you get great views of Star Wars Land.

Toy Story Mania!

Much like Buzz Lightyear Space Ranger Spin, Toy Story Mania! is an attraction that has guests competing with one another for a high score by shooting targets.

Also like Buzz Lightyear, this attraction has really long lines all day long.

Star Tours ā€“ The Adventure Continues

For Star Tours, I highly recommend checking the wait times before getting a FastPass.

This is a very popular ride, however, often I found that it had a reasonable line (5-20 minutes).

That being said, during peak times of the year you will totally need to use a FastPass on this attraction.

Best Rides to Use FastPass+ on at Epcot

Entrance to Spaceship Earth at Epcot at Walt Disney World
Epcot takes on a whole new feel at night.

Soarinā€™ Around the World

Soarinā€™ Around the World is one of my favorite rides.

Itā€™s super chill and mellow, and you fly around the world as though youā€™re on a hang glider.

Itā€™s also indoors, so itā€™s great on a hot day.

There arenā€™t a lot of rides at Epcot, so those few usually have really long lines. Soarinā€™ is an attraction that totally warrants a FastPass.

Test Track

Test Track is a really cool attraction where guests are invited to create their own car and race it against others.

This and Frozen Ever After definitely had the longest lines at Epcot, so use a FastPass if you can.

Frozen Ever After

Frozen Ever After is a super popular attraction that puts you on a boat ride through the world of Frozen.

Kids will love it and the FastPasses go incredibly fast due to the popularity of Frozen.

You will want to get a FastPass for this as early as you can because they will run out.

6.  Stay on Top of Your FastPass Times

Pay attention to your FastPass times. You can only hold 3 FastPasses at a time and you must return during the timeframe they set for you.

I did return outside the time range for one ride and was still allowed to enter, though.

This will not always happen. I was very polite and explained the ā€œsituationā€ for my lateness.

I basically told the cast member that the ride I was in line for broke down and I was near the front and was late because of the 20-minute delay it caused.

In reality, I was getting some beers with friends and we totally forgot about the FastPass time.

Being super polite and convincing with your sob-sob story for missing your FastPass time can help your cause.

Once youā€™ve used your 3 FastPasses, immediately get on the My Disney Experience app and try to get FastPasses for additional rides.

This is basically the hustle youā€™re going to have to do all day. It doesnā€™t always work, especially later in the day.

However, check several rides to see if you can snag one, even for a ride youā€™ve already been on.

A main goal of visiting Disney World is to go on as many attractions as you can.

One of the best Disney World tips and tricks is to stay on top of your FastPass times.

Grab more when they are available is vital to maxing out the number of rides you go on.

7.  Do Disneyā€™s Animal Kingdom and Disneyā€™s Hollywood Studios in the Same Day

I recommend visiting Disneyā€™s Animal Kingdom and Disneyā€™s Hollywood Studios in the same day.

Start early in the day at Disneyā€™s Animal Kingdom and make a bee-line to Avatar Flight of Passage.

That is definitely the first ride you should do because it is the most popular (as in has the longest lines) ride in all the parks.

Then head over to Kilimanjaro Safaris and do that attraction next. It also has really long lines, especially later in the day.

After those 2 attractions, you can navigate the rest of what you want to go on pretty easily.

Entrance to Disney's Animal Kingdom
Me at Entrance to Animal Kingdom Disney World

After lunch, head over to Disneyā€™s Hollywood Studios to finish the day.

Star Tours typically has short lines, so you can do that ride whenever.

I would recommend going on Slinky Dog Dash first. Itā€™s the newest attraction at the park and is a lot of fun for all ages.

The lines are typically a little shorter later in the evening, however.

Tower of Terror and Rock ā€˜nā€™ Roller Coaster also have long lines. However, they are manageable and not soul-crushing like Avatar Flight of Passage.

If you do Animal Kingdom and Hollywood Studios in the same day, be sure you start early.

Starting earlier allows you to get on the more popular rides with much smaller lines. It will be a long day, but totally worth it in the end.

Hollywood Studios has the lowest attendance of the 4 parks and should be done second.

There is more space to move about and the lines are typically shorter than in the other parks.

Also, you can end the day watching Star Wars: A Galactic Spectacular, which is amazing.

Star Wars Galaxy’s Edge Update

Star Wars Galaxy’s Edge opened August 29th. It will be packed for sure.

The best Disney World tip I can give you is to get over to Star Wars Galaxy’s Edge right away. However, be prepared for massive lines.

They will have virtual queues for the rides, which you can access through the app. It’s designed so you don’t lose your spot in line during the long-ass waits.

The area to build your own lightsaber is by reservation only. Make that reservation as soon as you can, and be ready to spend at least $200 on those bad boys.

Star Wars Galaxy’s Edge is already open at Disneyland and I can tell you it is absolutely incredible. You won’t want to miss it!

8.  Bring a Stroller to the Disney World Parks for Smaller Kids

If you are thinking, ā€œShould I bring a stroller or not,ā€ bring one.

Even if your child walks around all the time, going to theme parks is exhausting and a ton of walking.

Younger children will wear down and pushing them in a stroller is much easier on everyone than carrying your worn-out kiddo.

There are stroller parking areas near most of the attractions with tons of strollers there.

I believe it is totally safe to leave your stroller parked amongst them. Iā€™ve never heard from anyone I know or anyone I talked to at the parks about any theft issues.

Even though it is very safe, as always, use your best judgement.

As an added bonus, you can pack up your stroller with sweatshirts, sunblock, hats and other extras you wonā€™t have to carry.

Which brings me to the next of my Disney World tips and tricks.

9.  Bring Snacks and Drinks with You to the Disney World Parks

Disney World is super expensive, especially if you are with a family. Paying for snacks, meals, drinks, sweets and souvenirs really adds up.

Good news is that Disney theme parks allow you to bring in bags, food and drinks. You cannot bring a cooler, however, everything else is pretty much fair game.

I always bring drinks (like Gatorade and water) and snacks. Protein bars are great because they give you energy throughout the day without having to splurge on a meal.

Also, stopping for meals cuts into your time spent on rides!

For kids, bring juice boxes, waters and whatever snacks they like.

You can bring your refillable water bottles and fill them up anywhere they sell meals.

Disney World offers free cups of water everywhere they sell food.

Just be really nice and ask. If one place shoots you down, go to the next one.

I never had any difficulty having my water bottles refilled. Often times the cast members would ask if I wanted ice, too.

Be polite and youā€™ll get hooked up.

10.  Adult Beverage Hacks for Disney World

Hey, youā€™re out there walking around all day, lugging kids around and standing in line. Thereā€™s nothing quite like having a beer or cocktail to get you through the day.

Every park has alcohol for sale, but those drinks are hella expensive. At the Magic Kingdom you can only get drinks from their sit-down restaurants.

There is a way to have easier access to alcohol and save money while at Disney World.

A simple little hack I do is, well, I just bring my own alcohol on the DL!

Take a Gatorade bottle, dump it out (or some of it out) and fill it with the cocktail or liquor you want that is a similar color.

I usually take a lemon-lime Gatorade, pour it out, then fill it with a margarita. Then, you just need to get a cup of ice from anywhere and youā€™re good to go!

I have brought ice packs and stuffed them in my backpack to keep the bottles cold, however, they donā€™t really work as well, especially on hot days.

If you have a stroller, fill a flask and mix it in with all the stuff youā€™re bringing on the bottom.

I recommend using a plastic flask ā€“ itā€™s what I use. You can also fill a plastic water bottle up with tequila, rum, gin or tequila.

Cast members search your bags before you enter. They do not, however, take the lids off bottles to give a sniff test.

That being said, if you spill on the outside of the bottle, wash it off so your bottle doesnā€™t smell like booze. Letā€™s be smart about this.

Also, donā€™t get too wasted, they will kick you out.

Be sure to drink plenty of water, too, especially on hot days. Heat stroke and alcohol poisoning are real folks!

11.  Plan Ahead, but Be Prepared to Call an Audible

Have a loose idea of your plan of attack for the day. Wandering around aimlessly just wastes time.

Pick out which ride you want to go on first, then select your next rides from attractions nearby. This is the most efficient way of going on rides.

You waste a lot of time crossing back and forth around the park. Select a land and do what you would like in that area before moving on to the next land.

That being said, sometimes things change. There are meltdowns, a sudden rush of people or an attraction closes/breaks down.

When that occurs, have a plan B in mind. Pirates of the Caribbean broken down?

No problem, Haunted Mansion, Splash Mountain and Big Thunder Mountain are not too far away.

Make your way over to one of those rides instead.

Another time saving hack, book it to rides during parades and fireworks shows.

The lines tend to go down while people are watching those events. As an added bonus, you can see the fireworks from the line or on the ride if itā€™s outside.

I did that for Seven Dwarfs Mine Train and got to see the fireworks display from the ride. It was a unique experience and totally awesome.

12.  Rider Swaps ā€“ for Parents with Children that Canā€™t or Wonā€™t Go on Rides

Youā€™re at Magic Kingdom and your child is asleep when you get to the front of the line at Space Mountain.

Instead of just leaving or waking your child up, just let the cast member know you will be doing a rider swap.

Rider swaps allow as many people in your group to go, while someone (or a couple) stay back with children that are not riding. The cast member will have the one(s) watching the kid(s) wait in a designated area while the rest of the group rides.

Once the ride is over, you just swap places.

Whoever was doing the watching lets the cast members know they are doing a rider swap and now they get to ride. Itā€™s really easy and an awesome feature to utilize.

13.  Dress Appropriately

Me in Front of Hollywood Studios Disney World at Sunset
During winter it gets cold. Be sure to bring a sweatshirt!

Before entering the parks, the first thing you want to do is check the weather report.

Is it going to be hot and sunny? Throw on some sunblock, bring a hat and some shades and wear lighter clothes. Is it going to be cold? Bring a jacket and maybe a scarf or beanie.

It is incredibly important to be prepared for the weather. I always recommend bringing at least a sweatshirt because the nights do cool down and more often than naught you need one.

Orlando gets plenty of rain and you need to be prepared. If you see rain in the forecast for the day, bring a raincoat or a rain poncho and/or an umbrella.

Disney World does not close for rain (they have closed for hurricanes, though).

Some of the outdoor attractions will close, however, the majority of the park is open. Have your rain gear ready for those times.

The most important attire I can recommend is having comfortable footwear.

You will be walking and standing a lot. Your feet and legs will get tired.

I love my sandals, but a Disney park is not the best for them.

I always bring a comfortable pair of shoes that I know wonā€™t wear me out after a long day.

14.  Make the Most out of Rainy Days

When it rains at a Disney Park, things clear out fast. Most people donā€™t like being out in the elements like that.

Hit the park hard if youā€™re prepared for the rain. The popular rides might have lines early in the day, but later on they clear out when people are just over walking around in the rain.

Rainy days are perfect for getting in a lot more rides than youā€™d normally be able to.

15.  Best Views for Fireworks Shows

The Disney Parks do not hold back with their fireworks and light shows. They are simply amazing, and you need to see at least one.

Most people try to mash up as close to the launching point as possible for the shows.

In the Magic Kingdom, everyone tries to get as close to the castle as they can. In Hollywood Studios, they are right up to the front of the Chinese Theatre.

This is not the best course of action.

The best way to see the fireworks shows is to be a little further back and toward the center.

You want to try and be middle back and to the center. This gives you a great view of everything going on without having to turn your head side-to-side to see everything in the periphery.

Being a little further back is also ideal for filming because all the lights and fireworks will be in frame without panning.

Epcot is a little different. The spectacular fountain, light and fireworks show, Illuminations: Reflections of Earth, takes place on the World Showcase Lagoon.

I believe the best locations to view the show would be dead center in either Japan, The American Adventure or Italy.

If you canā€™t find a good spot there, donā€™t worry because there really isnā€™t a bad viewing area since the lagoon is so big.

READ MORE: Come see my top Disneyland tips and tricks!

The parades and fireworks shows gather large crowds. Certain pathways are roped off and no one is allowed to cross during parades.

This is a great time to head over to some of the more popular rides to get in line.

The lines are typically much shorter during parades and fireworks shows, allowing you to sneak more attractions in during your visit.

17.  Bring a Portable Charger

Now, this isnā€™t a total necessity, but it is nice to have a portable charger with you.

Between texting, social media, the Disney app and taking pictures your phone will use up a lot of juice.

Iā€™ve definitely seen people really stressed out because their phone was dying or dead.

The easy solution for this is to bring a small portable charger with you. I bring one with me whenever I travel, and it has saved me more than once.

I recommend this 10,000 mAh charger by Anker. It is smaller than a cell phone and can charge an iPhone or Galaxy fully twice before needing to be recharged.

18.  Get Back to Your Car Faster at the Magic Kingdom at the End of the Day

Getting out of a Disney World park at the end of the night is a shit show. There are thousands of people all being ushered out of the park and into a line to get back to the parking lots.

There are a few options with this.

You can dip out a little early to beat the rush or look through the shops (they stay open later) while everyone else waits in line. Or you can just go out with everyone else.

Once you do exit the park, you either have to take the Monorail or ferry to the parking lot. Both lines are massive and slow moving.

I found the faster move is to walk down and cut into the Monorail line that goes to the hotels.

These Monorails also stop at some of the parking lots; however, their lines are much shorter. Itā€™s a great way to bypass the madness at the end of the night.

19.  Stay at a Disney Hotel if You Donā€™t Have a Car

If you are not going to rent or bring a car and donā€™t plan on visiting the other theme parks in Orlando, then I recommend staying at one of the Disney resorts.

Check out my review of the Hilton Orlando Bonnet Creek

All the Disney resorts have either a shuttle or Monorail to the park entrances. You also get complimentary MagicBands, as I stated before.

The Disney resorts will also pick you up and drop you off at Orlando International Airport.

Another really cool benefit is you get enjoy select attractions before or after regular park hours their Extra Magic Hours. This is only valid with a select number of Disney World Resort hotels.

This is a great option to avoid having to pay for parking or renting a car.

20.  Use Apple Pay, Google Wallet or Android and Samsung Pay

The days of having to whip out your credit card to pay for stuff is coming to an end.

You can use Apple Pay, Google Wallet, Android Pay, and Samsung Pay at all the Disney World parks.

I love using these contactless payment methods.

I have an iPhone and use Apple Pay all the time. It is so easy to set up and use and really saves you time at checkout. No more digging through your purse or wallet to find your credit card.

Just tap your phone or watch to the card reader and the transaction is done. Welcome to the 21stcentury everyone!

Fastpass hasn’t been a thing for about the last year. So not sure why you went so in depth with that feature when according to Disney, they won’t use it for the foreseeable future

Hi John. Thanks for your comment! I wrote this originally before the pandemic when there was still FastPass at the park. Thank you for bringing to my attention that I need to update the post to take the latest park changes into consideration.

How do you know which parking lots the hotel monorails stop at?

Hi Amanda! Thank you for your comment! The Monorail stops at Disney’s Contemporary Resort, Disney’s Grand Floridian Resort and Spa, and Disney’s Polynesian Village Resort. The Monorail also stops at the Transportation and Ticket Center (TTC) for the Magic Kingdom, Magic Kingdom Park, and Epcot.
